Farhana Shahzady, Partner, Mediator and Collaborative Lawyer in Family Law
Farhana is a Family Law Partner, Mediator and Collaborative Lawyer in the divorce and family team who practices in London. She regularly advises clients in Fulham, Parsons Green and Wandsworth along with regularly seeing clients in Kings Cross, Euston and Central London although she is happy to work with client’s wherever they are situated including overseas.
Farhana is an experienced and accredited family specialist with over 18 years post qualification experience and has been recognized in both Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. She has previously headed a leading family team in London and practiced in the City where she dealt with complex family cases often requiring a multi-disciplinary approach. Farhana is a Resolution Accredited Specialist in both financial and children cases as well as being a Law Society Family Law Panel member. Additionally, Farhana is one of only 20 Directors of Resolution which is the leading organization for family lawyers which places her at forefront of family work in England & Wales. Farhana has recently had the privilege of contributing to the new Family Law Handbook which will be published in spring 2020.
Farhana’s expertise is in the full range of matrimonial, co-habitation and separation issues to include dealing with same sex relationships, modern families and clients from a faith background, especially those of Jewish or Islamic heritage. Farhana has a particular expertise in contested financial and children disputes at court and regularly deals with court applications in relation to matrimonial finance including freezing injunctions, urgent spousal maintenance, setting aside and variation applications along with Schedule 1 cases where school fees and top up child maintenance is at issue.
Farhana has also amassed considerable expertise in dealing with children cases and represents both mothers and fathers in issues over relocation or child arrangements to include section 8 orders such as prohibited steps and specific issue, as well as dealing with disputes over where the child should live (previously known as “residence”) and how much time the child should spend with the non-resident parent (“contact”).
Farhana’s clients greatly value her strategic and results driven approach, which often leads to early settlement. As well as being an astute litigator, Farhana is very cost conscious and is committed, whenever possible, to try to negotiate settlements without recourse to court proceedings. She is a mediator and collaboratively trained which means she will always have an eye to dispute resolution since that can often be less expensive as well as minimize conflict. If, however, court is inevitable or the case is drawn out, Farhana will always discuss with the client how costs of the case can be best managed since she knows that can be an added stress at an already difficult time.
