Farhana Shahzady, Partner in Family Law
Farhana is a Family Law Partner who has over 18 years’ post qualification experience working in a highly rated Chambers and Legal 500 team at TWM. She has previously headed a leading Family team in London and practiced in the City where she dealt with complex family cases, often requiring a multi-disciplinary approach and acute sensitivity to the myriad of family issues involved. Farhana is a Resolution Accredited Specialist in both financial and children cases, as well as being a Law Society Family Law Panel member. Importantly, Farhana is one of only 20 Directors of Resolution and is at the forefront of family work in England & Wales.
Farhana’s expertise is in the full range of matrimonial, co-habitation and separation issues to include dealing with same-sex relationships and modern families. Farhana has a particular expertise in contested financial and children disputes at court and regularly deals with court applications in relation to matrimonial finance, including freezing injunctions, urgent spousal maintenance, setting aside and variation applications along with Schedule 1 cases where school fees and top up child maintenance is at issue.
Farhana has also amassed considerable expertise in dealing with children disputes and represents both mothers and fathers in issues over relocation or child arrangements to include section 8 orders such as prohibited steps and specific issue, as well as dealing with disputes over where the child should live (previously known as “residence”) and how much time the child should spend with the non-resident parent (“contact”).
Farhana prides herself on her strategic and results driven approach, which often leads to early settlement. As well as being an astute litigator, Farhana is very cost-conscious and is committed, whenever possible, to try to negotiate settlements without recourse to court proceedings. She is collaboratively trained and will seek to explore alternative dispute resolution such as negotiation mediation and arbitration since that can often be cheaper and less acrimonious. If, however, court is inevitable or the case is drawn out, Farhana will always discuss with the client how costs of the case can be best managed, since she knows that can be an added stress at an already difficult time.
